Company Description

With a workforce of over 30,000 people, and opportunities in more than 1,000 different job categories, the City of Philadelphia is the fifth-largest city in the United States and one of the largest employers in Southeastern Pennsylvania. As an employer, the City of Philadelphia operates through the guiding principles of service, integrity, respect, accountability, collaboration, diversity, and inclusion. Through these principles, we strive to effectively deliver services, to resolve the challenges facing our city, and to make Philadelphia a place where all our residents have the opportunity to reach their potential.

Job Description

The City of Philadelphia Mayor’s Internship Program (MIP) is an opportunity for current college undergraduate and graduate students to learn about and contribute to the City government that manages operations for the nation’s 6th largest municipality. MIP hosts the best and brightest students from around the country to come to Philadelphia every summer and explore all our great city has to offer.

The Mayor’s Internship Program (MIP) is a ten-week PAID internship beginning June 1, 2020, and ending August 7, 2020. Interns are required to commit to a minimum of 25 hours per week and to be available to work duration of the internship period (MIP will, on a case-by-case basis, consider limited exceptions for applicants with exigent circumstances or an academic conflict).

The MIP consists of three main components:

Work component: Placement in a single department completing substantive work assignments

“Exploring Government”: Programming every Friday morning; includes speaker events, networking opportunities, visits to municipal operations and programs, and leadership development training

My Philly Summer: Interns are invited to participate in the “My Philly Summer” program with Campus Philly. This program engages interns working across various businesses in Philadelphia over the summer for fun, thought-provoking, and free networking events throughout the summer.

There will also be occasional after-hours social and networking events for Mayor’s Interns to attend, but such events are not mandatory.

Mayor’s Interns work on projects and tasks providing research, administrative, and staff assistance to City managers. Past interns have assisted City staff in various functions such as:

* Research and analysis

* Drafting presentations, reports, and press releases

* Financial Analysis

* Program Planning & Improvement

* Organizational and Administrative Support

Our summer interns come from across the country and represent a wide range of colleges, graduate programs, and majors. Mayor’s Interns have helped complete grant applications, compile and analyze financial data, develop training and policy manuals, improve constituent relations, and assist in planning and implementing key City events across various departments and agencies. Examples of past participating departments include: Office of the City Controller; City Treasurer’s Office; Commerce Department, Office of Behavioral Health/Intellectual DisAbility Services; Office of LGBTQ Affairs; Department of Human Services; Police Department; Managing Director’s Office; Mayor’s Office of Community & Economic Opportunity Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.

We believe the opportunity for interns to experience the City of Philadelphia as a potential employer and place to live is a vital component of this program. Interns will have the chance to interact with other college students in the area, participate in numerous community events, and join activities designed to guide local exploration.
