West Philadelphia, June 11, 2023 – The Philadelphia Water Department has issued a boil water advisory for parts of upper West Philadelphia.
Affected Areas: Approximately 18,000 customer accounts are impacted, including customers who experienced water loss or low pressure in the following areas:
- Wynnefield Heights, Wynnefield, Overbrook Farms, Green Hill Farms, Overbrook, Overbrook Park, Morris Park
- Parts of Carrol Park, Haddington, West Parkside, and West Fairmount Park
- ZIP codes: 19151, and parts of 19131 and 19139
Customer Instructions: If you are in an area that has been notified of the boil water advisory, it is important not to drink the water without boiling it first.
Here are the instructions for using water for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing formula:
- Bring the water to a rolling boil.
- Allow it to boil for one minute.
- Let the water cool before using.
Cause of the Advisory: Between approximately 3:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. on June 11, 2023, a pumping station serving a section of upper West Philadelphia experienced a failure. This resulted in a loss of pressure in the system and left some customers without water. While water pressure has been restored, customers are advised to boil the water before using it.
The precautionary boil water advisory has been issued because a lack of pressure can create a vacuum that could potentially draw disease-causing organisms, such as bacteria, into the water pipes.
