On July 24, Philadelphia Democratic Party Chair Bob Brady and local Democrats made it clear they want Gov. Josh Shapiro to be Kamala Harris’ running mate. The city party officially endorsed Shapiro for vice president in a vote on Tuesday.
In a fundraising email, the party announced, “This evening, the Philadelphia Democratic Party met to formally (and unanimously) add our names to the list of endorsements for Vice President Harris to be the Democratic nominee for President.”
Brady emphasized that Harris’ next major decision is choosing a vice presidential candidate. “We believe our Governor, Josh Shapiro, is an excellent choice. That’s why tonight we also endorsed Josh to be the VP nominee,” Brady said.
On Monday, both the city and state Democratic parties unanimously endorsed Harris, with all Democratic delegates also supporting her, helping her surpass the threshold to become the party’s presumptive nominee. It’s somewhat unconventional for city Democrats to endorse someone not officially in the race, but this reflects the unique nature of this election year.
Shapiro has not confirmed or denied interest in the position, stating on Tuesday that he has not submitted paperwork for vetting. However, Brady is confident in Shapiro’s suitability.
